CIFAL Global Network brings together Ma & Morley scholars and Chinese youth to advance SDG education and cross-cultural leadership.
Shanghai, 12 May 2026 — The Ma & Morley Programme Shanghai Workshop was held today at the Changning Campus of East China University of Political Science and Law (ECUPL). The event convened educators, young leaders and volunteers from both nations to advance the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and foster cross-cultural leadership.
The workshop was hosted by Ms. Wu Qiaofang, Director of the International Exchange Office and Dean of the School of International Education, opened with welcome addresses from Mr. Luo Peixin,Vice President of ECUPL; Mr. Wu Yugang, Executive Director of CIFAL Shanghai; Dr. Alek Voninski, Pro Vice-Chancellor Global of the University of Newcastle; and Ms. Maryanne Pidcock, Ma & Morley Scholarship Program Coordinator at the University of Newcastle. The speakers highlighted the CIFAL Global Global Network’s longstanding role in internationalising education and promoting sustainable development, and expressed strong support for deepening China-Australia academic and youth cooperation. Following the addresses, representatives from the partner institutions participated in a signing ceremony and a group photo, formalising a new chapter of collaboration in talent development and global exchange.
The core programme focused on the SDGs. Ms. Gu Yang, Assistant to the Directors of CIFAL Shanghai, presented China’s notable progress in implementing the 2030 Agenda. Acclaimed visual storyteller Mr. Conor Ashleigh then led a photography workshop and skills session, guiding 27 Ma & Morley scholars from the University of Newcastle and ECUPL student volunteers to document authentic narratives of sustainable development.
The session continued with group discussions, a coffee break and gift exchange, and culminated in a “Best Photo Presentation & Critique” segment where participants showcased their creative works reflecting social responsibility and global citizenship. A talent show, certificate presentation and closing photo brought the immersive learning experience to a close.
The workshop drew nearly 40 participants, including representatives from the International Exchange Office and the School of International Education, ECUPL, and distinguished guests from CIFAL Shanghai and CIFAL Newcastle. The 27 Ma & Morley scholars, representing disciplines spanning law, education, environmental science, medicine and engineering, were joined by volunteers from ECUPL, NYU Shanghai and North America International School.
The Ma & Morley Scholarship Program is funded by the Jack Ma Foundation and administered by the University of Newcastle. Established to honour the enduring friendship between Chinese entrepreneur Jack Ma and Australian educator Ken Morley, the programme cultivates next-generation leaders with global vision and social responsibility through immersive China-based study, leadership training and lifelong professional networking.
