Tsinghua University Visits CIFAL Shanghai

2025-06-30

On June 6, 2025, a delegation of eight members from the Center for Global Competence Development at Tsinghua University visited CIFAL Shanghai. Both parties engaged in an in-depth exchange on international organizations, talent cultivation, and the advancement of United Nations projects. They jointly explored new pathways for international cooperation and talent development, aiming to provide students with opportunities to gain a deep understanding of the operations of international organizations and to nurture international talents with global competence.

Mr. Wang Genxiang, Director of CIFAL Shanghai, introduced the cooperation between the Shanghai Municipal Government and UN agencies since 2000, emphasizing the importance of UN agencies and international organizations for Shanghai’s international development. He also highlighted the long-term collaboration between UNITAR and the Shanghai Municipal Government, as well as the development journey, mission, and international cooperation projects of CIFAL Shanghai.

The Tsinghua University representatives outlined the university’s efforts in enhancing students’ global competence, including the establishment of the Global Competence Center, the current status of student participation in UN affairs, and the challenges faced. Currently, over 100 Tsinghua students are interning at the UN, with a cumulative total of 500-600 interns. However, the difficulty for students to secure positions within the UN has increased due to UN system layoffs and the suspension of the Young Professionals Programme (YPP) exam.

Both sides also expressed their intention to collaborate on joint workshops, research projects, or capacity-building initiatives, and had in-depth discussions on communication and coordination mechanisms.

This visit laid a solid foundation for future cooperation. Both parties believe that deepening cooperation will help cultivate international talents with global competence and enhance China’s influence in international organizations. Moving forward, they will continue to explore more opportunities for collaboration and jointly contribute to the global sustainable development agenda.
